A little over two years ago, Dev-Audio was formed and started working to make a better microphone device for groups. While we have so many modern devices designed for individuals, there are comparatively few technologies designed to support groups of users communicating naturally in the same place, face to face.

It has been a challenging journey from idea to reality, marked by this week’s release of Dev-Audio’s first product, Microcone Recorder, to facilitate the recording and analysis of group meetings. While Dev-Audio is only a small company, many people from around the world have generously gone beyond the call of duty to help achieve this milestone, for which we are grateful. It has been a pleasant experience discovering that while the business world can have a tough facade, there are companies (and even government departments) that are full of friendly people happy to help.

The product contains some innovative technology “under the hood”: Dev-Audio’s microphone array beamforming, localisation and voice segmentation, automatic speaker identification licensed from the IDIAP Research Institute, and automatic meeting transcription enabled by another start-up company, Koemei.

Through conscious design, the technical nature of these innovations is kept hidden behind the scenes of a simple device and software interface that makes things easier and faster* for people needing to record, annotate and analyse meetings.
